The Traditional Musical Cultures Department (from 1982 to 2011, the Folk Music Department) performs scientific, methodological, educational, learning, organizational and creative functions.

The tasks of the Traditional Musical Cultures Department (according to the Regulations of May 8, 2015) are:
– providing the educational process, scientific work, creative and publishing activities of the Academy with musical and folklore materials that have undergone archival processing;
– development of methodological recommendations on the organization and conducting of expeditionary research, as well as the use of their results in the educational process, scientific and creative practice;
– acquisition and storage of funds of musical and folklore materials;
– popularization of the Belarusian oral traditional musical culture through the organization of musical and ethnographic concerts, festivals, conferences, lectures and other events;
– planning and organizing of folklore musical and ethnographic field research on the ethnic Belarusian territories.

The main results of the activities of the Traditional Musical Cultures Department for the period 2017–2022:

  • Organization and conducting of a) expeditions within the framework of educational folklore practice, with a focus on frontal examination of the territory of a separate region (Lida district of the Grodno region, Kamenets district of the Brest region, Kalinkovichi district of the Gomel region, Sharkovschina district of the Vitebsk region, Volozhin district of the Minsk region), b) expeditionary research according to the plans of the Department scientific and methodological work (Slobodka village of the Shklov district in the Mogilev region, Osovo village of the Soligorsk district in the Minsk region, Rychev village of the Zhitkovichi district in the Gomel region, Khotynichi village of the Gantsevichi district in the Brest region, the bearer of the traditions of the Stakhovo village of the Stolin district in the Brest region).
  • Compilation and preparation for printing of makeup pages of 8 issues of a series of annotated audio publications on CDs “Audioatlas of traditional musical culture of Belarus” (issues 7-14).
  • Publication of 2 monographs, 5 sections in monographs, 29 articles, 2 collections of scientific papers, 2 curricula and teaching materials.
  • Fulfillment of the research task on the topic “Developing a guide for conducting an expeditionary survey of the regional folk song traditions of Belarus in modern conditions”, deadlines: April 1, 2018 – December 20, 2018; State Registration No. 20180635 (within the framework of the Plan of scientific research and study aids of a national, branch purpose, aimed at scientific and technical support for the activities of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus).

Participation in the organization of scientific, scientific and practical and creative events:

  • XXVI-XXXI International Scientific Conferences in memory of L.S.Mukharinskaya and International Forums of Ethnic Cultures;
  • round tables: “Expeditionary field research on traditional musical culture in the system of Higher education: results and prospects” (01.10.2020), “Round table in memory of PhD in Art History, Professor I.D.Nazina” (04.04.2022);
  • musical and ethnographic concerts with the participation of the bearers of ethnic musical traditions of the Chausy and Osipovichi districts of the Mogilev region, Gantsevichi and Drogichin districts of the Brest region, Kalinkovichi and Mozyr districts of the Gomel region. (2017-2019, within the framework of the International Forums of Ethnic Cultures);
  • exhibitions: “Tam, dze vechnuyu pesnyu pyae Belavezha” – the author’s photo exhibition by N.Danilovich and N.Kuzmich based on the results of the musical and ethnographic expedition to the Kamenets district of the Brest region. (as part of the XXVІІ International Scientific Conference in memory of L.S.Mukharinskaya, April 27-30, 2017); “Belaruskae vyaselle: abrad, nosbit, pesnya” – a photo exhibition with audio accompaniment within the framework of the Month of Photography in Minsk, curator from the Traditional Musical Cultures Department – N.Danilovich (13.09-13.10.2017, National Center for Contemporary Arts); audio accompaniment of the exhibition as part of the International Exhibition Project “Alphabet of War” dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War (08.05-20.09.2020, National Center for Contemporary Arts).
  • speeches with 44 reports and messages, 7 presentations of new publications at International Scientific (Scientific and Practical) Conferences, readings, forums, symposiums in Minsk, Mogilev, Moscow, St.Petersburg, Saratov, Perm, Lvov, Odessa, Vienna.
  • preparing and conducting a lecture-presentation on the topic “The current state of the elements of the non-material cultural heritage of the Republic of Belarus: an ethnic musicologist’s view” (V.Pribylova, 2020).
  • creation and demonstration of the video film “From the History of Musical and Ethnographic Concerts within the International Festival of Ethnic Cultures at the Belarusian Academy of Music” (author V.Pribylova, 49 min., 2021).
  • performance in 8 radio programs on the channel “Culture” of the Belarusian Radio (programs “Belaruskaya etnaphoniya”, “Vektor”, “Knigarnya”).
  • work as members of the jury of at the Conferences-Competitions and Expert Commissions of Folklore Festivals: X Republican Festival of Folklore Art “Bereginya” (2018, Oktyabrsky town), the First Open Folklore Festival “Vytoki”, organized as part of events dedicated to the Year of the Small Motherland (2018, Osipovichi), the Second Open Competition of the Belarusian Folk Singing and Musical Instrumental Performance “Zguki minuushchyny” (2020, Minsk).
