RESEARCH

The Belarusian State Academy of Music is one of the major research centres in the field of musicology, folklore, aesthetics, and musical pedagogy.

Academy is the organizer of research and methodological conferences in musical education and performing arts as well as theory and history of music.

The academy staff is actively engaged in publishing research papers, thematic journals, study guides, syllabi, textbooks in music subjects and music scores.

There are Doctors of Sciences among teaching staff of the Academy – Catherine Doulova, Vladimir Skorokhodov, Inessa Dvuzhilnaya, Nikolay Shimansky, Vadim Yakonyuk.

Graduates from the Academy have an opportunity to study Master’s degree and Postgraduate programmes. The Academy has its own Student Research and Creative Society.

Research at the Academy

The main functions of the higher education institution are research and innovations according to Chapter 4 of the Academy Charter. In compliance with the National Classification “Types of economic activities” and paragraph 21 of the Charter, the Academy conducts scientific research in the field of social sciences and humanities.

Research at the Academy is conducted in accordance with the training programmes “Arts and design” and “Humanities” in the fields of “Humanities” and “Social sciences and economics” as well as in compliance with the implementation of Belarus National Strategy of Sustainable Social and Economic Development-2030 (priority – Education for sustainable development aimed at formation of quality education system: updating of contents and education structure), paragraph 6 “Ensuring social, humanitarian, economic and information security” (human, society and the state, history, culture, education and youth policy, etc.), Priority areas of scientific, science, technology and innovation activities for 2021-2025 approved by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus 07.05.2020 №156.

Research activities are carried out in the following areas:

  • conducting fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of professional musical art and education aimed at enhancement of scientific and methodological support of the process, implementation of modern and information technologies, training, retraining and professional advancement quality improvement;
  • arranging department activities, implementing self-formulated topics within research activities as well as and teaching and methodological work of the teaching staff of the departments;
  • arranging research for the students to enhance cooperation between talented youth and the Academy;
  • training of senior researchers;
  • research results approbation of the staff and students of the Academy;
  • boosting the cooperation with partner higher education institutions in research activities.

Research activities at the Academy are carried out in accordance with the Long-term Plan for Research, Scientific and Methodological Work, which shows the current fields of research, as well as the priorities for the development of scientific schools of the Academy. The purpose of the activity is to increase the scientific and scientific-methodological potential of the Academy by conducting scientific research, scientific and organizational activities, publishing, introducing the results of research into the educational process.

Research activities at the Academy are carried out by:

  • researching complex problems in the field of musical art, music education, and professional performing arts;
  • conducting scientific conferences, seminars, educational projects, competitions;
  • exchanging experience in scientific, methodological, and creative work.

The organizational structure of the research activity today includes: the Scientific Council, the Dissertation Advisory Board, the Research Department, the Problem Research Laboratory, the Editorial and Publishing Department, the Postgraduate and Doctoral School, Room of traditional musical cultures and the Student Scientific-Creative Society.

Three times – in 2013, 2018 and 2023, the educational institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music” was accredited by the State Committee for Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as a scientific organization.

Research work is one of the activities of the teaching staff and students of the educational institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music” and is organized in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Belarus “On Scientific Activity”, dated 21.10.1996 No. 708-XIII, the Education Code of the Republic of Belarus dated 13.01.2011 No. 243-3, the Regulation on the Institution of higher education approved by the Resolution of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, dated 01.08.2012 No. 93; the Instruction on the procedure for organizing research work of students of higher educational institutions of the Republic of Belarus, approved by the Resolution of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, dated 31.03.2006 No. 27, Academy Standard STA P 7.5.1.-2012, other regulatory legal acts and documents regulating scientific and innovative activities.

The Academy has a Research Department.

The Research Department aims at:

  • conducting basic and applied research, aimed at gaining new knowledge;
  • efficient training of senior researchers;
  • ensuring the development and implementation of proposals to stimulate and further improve the research activities of the Academy in accordance with the idea of continuous integration of science, education and production;
  • implementing of the latest technologies, research findings, educational services in research and educational process of the Academy in accordance with the license to carry out educational activities issued to the Academy;
  • facilitating of drawing up and implementing projects of the Academy faculty;
  • providing consultations as well as research and educational services in the main areas of the Academy activities;
  • making profit of research results;
  • fostering international research and technical cooperation;
  • facilitating Quality Management System functioning.

 In accordance with the long-term Plans for Research, Scientific and Methodological Work of the education institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music” for 2016-2020 and 2020-2025 departments of the academy are actively involved in 6 areas of fundamental research.

The Academy has 4 scientific and pedagogical schools that have received national and international recognition and play a significant role in the development of domestic music science, education and culture:

  • Scientific school for historical musicology and Belarusian music. The study of the history of domestic and foreign music, the history of Russian music, the history of the music of Eurasian countries, and the history of world music are the main focuses of the school’s pedagogical and scientific activity. Aesthetic-philosophical and stylistic aspects of the works of Belarusian composers are studied contextually in the system of world artistic values.
  • Scientific school of theoretical musicology. Studying historical and theoretical issues of global and Belarusian musical culture, as well as topical problems of musical forms, genres, pitch organization, melody, texture, polyphony, and musical psychology, are one of the school’s key research focuses.
  • Ethnomusicological scientific school. Research in the field of folk musical culture. The scope of research includes a comprehensive coverage of the manifestations of the Belarusian musical culture and the corresponding/related specializations: – musical folklore, folk musical instrumental studies, musical paleography, musical local history, musical textual criticism, musical sociology. Research, teaching, and training for postgraduate applications and students are all done in the identified fields.
  • Musical pedagogy, theory and history of performing arts scientific school. The primary objective of the school is to establish a scientific and scientific-methodological foundation for enhancing the educational preparation of Academy students. The foundations of the methodology for teaching disciplines of a special cycle at different levels of professional music education for all majors are being developed.
