On November 21, 2023 at 14.00, at a meeting of the Council of Thesis Defense at the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music” (30 International St., room 101), a public defense of Maxim Shkulepa’s dissertation for the academic degree of Candidate of Art History in the speciality “Musical Art” (17.00.02) will take place. The topic of the dissertation is “Pieces for trumpet in Belarusian music of the 20-21 centuries: composer’s creativity and performing practice”. The scientific work was carried out at the Department of Music History and Musical Belarusian Studies of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”. Scientific supervisor: Elena Lisova (Head of the Department of Music History and Musical Belarusian Studies of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”, PhD in Art History, Associate Professor). Official opponents:  Inessa Dvuzhilnaya (Doctor of Art History, Associate Professor, teacher of the Educational Institution “Grodno State Music College”, Skorokhodov Vladimir (PhD in Philosophy, Doctor of Cultural Studies (Russian Federation), Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Professor of the Woodwind Instruments Department of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”. Opposing organization: State Scientific Institution “Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus”.

The purpose of the study is to identify the genre-style and figurative originality of works for trumpet by Belarusian composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, inspired by creative interaction with outstanding representatives of the Belarusian performing arts.

A comprehensive research methodology was used, including systemic and historical, historical and instrumental approaches, intonation and semantic analysis, individual and typological, individual and psychological, genre and style, hermeneutic, phenomenological methods and types of analysis.

The dissertation is the first study in Belarusian musicology of the music of Belarusian composers for trumpet, which arose during the long formation (1920s-1980s) and flourishing (1990s-2000s) of Belarusian performing art. The creativity of Belarusian composers and the activities of outstanding Belarusian trumpeters, teachers and performers is considered in the systemic unity of the interaction of cultural factors. The study proves that works for the trumpet by Belarusian composers reflect the individual interpretation of the instrument by composers, determined by the individual perception of the image of the trumpet as an instrument with a long history, established functions and figurative-expressive palette, and a stable melodic style.

The practical significance of the study is determined by its focus on expanding knowledge about the history of the formation and development of Belarusian wind art and the national school of trumpet playing. The results obtained allow us to form a holistic picture of the functioning of wind art as a system, in the trinity of factors “instrument – performer – composer”. The dissertation materials will serve as the basis for further research in the field of performance musicology and will find application in music theoretical courses at Brass and Percussion Instruments Department of the Belarusian State Academy of Music.

Area of application: art history, musicology, instrument studies, history and theory of performing arts, music pedagogy, cultural studies.

On December 27, 2022 at 14.00, at the meeting of the Council for Thesis Defense at the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music” (30 Internationalnaya St., room 101), a public defense of Svetlana Voronova’s dissertation for the academic Degree of PhD in Art History in the speciality “Musical Art” (17.00.02) will take place. The topic of the dissertation is “Opus memoriae in the works of Belarusian composers of the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries: national and universal.” The scientific work was carried out at the Department of Music History and Musical Belarusian Studies of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”. Scientific supervisor: Radoslava Aladova (PhD in Art History, Associate Professor). Official opponents: Raisa Sergienko (Doctor of Art History, Professor, Professor of the Music Theory Department of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”, Natalya Bychkova (PhD in Art History, Associate Professor, Associate Professor of the Department of Artistic Creativity and Production, Senior Researcher of Institute of Contemporary Knowledge named after A. M. Shirokov. Opposing organization: State Scientific Institution “Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus”. The purpose of the work is to identify the originality of Belarusian opus memoriae of the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in the global musical context through the discovery of their national genesis. The research methodology is based on an integrated approach that allows us to analyze memorial works by Russian authors in the unity of problems of musical content and compositional style. Some of the methods – the method of semiotic analysis, the method of comparative analysis, the method of holistic analysis – are inspired by the need to study each opus memoriae as a unique unity of musical and extra-musical, general cultural elements. At the same time, to identify the uniqueness of the musical memorials of Belarusian composers, a view from the position of the national mentality is required, which requires the use of the method of cultural analysis. In the dissertation, for the first time, the concept of “opus memoriae” is introduced into scientific use and justified as an indication of the fundamental individuality and uniqueness of the conceptual implementation of the memorial idea. An extensive body of works on memorial themes in the works of Belarusian composers in a selected time period is attributed and systematized.

A classification of domestic opus memoriae is proposed depending on the recipient of the memorial dedication. Musical memorials in the works of Belarusian composers of the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries are considered from the position of national mentality, which makes it possible to identify the relevance of this phenomenon to the national cultural tradition, determining the multiplicity of composers’ appeals to the phenomenon under study, and reveals the content, conceptual and stylistic specificity of Belarusian military musical memorials. The genesis and complex of musical stylistic means that represent opus memoriae in the works of L. Schleg, G. Gorelova and O. Khodosko are substantiated. The practical significance of the results of the research is confirmed by the acts of implementation (3 acts) of the dissertation materials in the training courses “History of Belarusian Music” for students of the group of specialties 1-16 01 Musical Arts, “History of Belarusian Music” specialty areas 1-21 04 02-01 Art history (musicology ) of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”, as well as for students of the Professional development and Staff Retraining Faculty of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”, studying in the educational program for advanced training of managers and specialists on the topic: “Theoretical and methodological foundations of teaching disciplines of the musicological cycle”. Area of application: art history, musicology (theory and history), cultural studies, music education.

ABSTRACT

On June 29, 2022 at 14.00, at the meeting of the Council for Thesis Defense at the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music” (30 Internatsionalnaya St., room 101), a public defense of the dissertation of Yuri Karaev for the academic degree of PhD in Art History in the specialty “Musical Art” (17.00.02) will take place. The topic of the dissertation is “Chorus in Belarusian operas of the 20th century: genre-style and compositional-dramatic features.” The scientific work was carried out at the Department of Music History and Musical Belarusian Studies of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”. Scientific supervisor: Antonina Karpilova (Head of the Screen Arts Department of the State Scientific Institution “Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus”, Associate Professor of the Department of Music History and Musical Belarusian Studies of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”, PhD in Art History, Associate Professor) . Official opponents: Larisa Gustova-Runzo (Professor of the Department of History and Theory of Art of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts”, Doctor of Art History, Professor), Irina Pilatova (Senior Researcher of the Research Department of the Educational Institution “Belarusian State Academy of Music”, PhD in Art History). Opposing organization: Educational Institution “Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maxim Tank”.

The purpose of the study is to determine the genre-style and compositional-dramatic features of the chorus in Belarusian operas of the twentieth century in the context of the development of national musical art.

The research methodology is based on an integrated approach based on the integration of historical and theoretical data, as well as the application of knowledge from the field of choral studies, which determines the figurative and meaningful role of the means of performing expressiveness. An integrated approach contributes to the study of the choir as a compositional-dramatic and genre-style component of an operatic composition, and allows us to trace the peculiarities of the formation and evolution of the functions of the opera choir throughout the twentieth century.

The dissertation is the first study in Belarusian musicology that examines the role of the choir in the national opera of the twentieth century, identifying the genre and style specificity of the choral part in terms of its multifunctionality at various levels – compositional, dramatic and conceptual. As research material, along with works already studied in musical science, works are used that have not previously been used for analysis in the field of dramaturgy and opera composition. In the process of working on the dissertation, some manuscripts of unpublished operatic works by Belarusian composers of the 20th century were analyzed.

The practical significance of the study is determined by its focus on expanding knowledge about the history of the development of national opera and about modern Belarusian choral art. The musical examples presented in the Appendix can be used as a basis for a textbook on the discipline “Conducting” when studying Belarusian choral music. The dissertation materials will serve as the basis for further research in the field of history and theory of Belarusian music, and will find application in music theoretical courses.

The results obtained allow us to form a holistic picture of the role of the choir in the operas of Belarusian composers of the 20th century; enrich modern musicology with research experience in the field of opera and choral dramaturgy.

Area of application: music education, musicology, history of Belarusian choral music.
