Anatoly Bogatyrev (1913–2003)

Belarusian composer. Honored Artist of the BSSR (1940), Honored Artist of the BSSR (1944). People’s Artist of the BSSR (1968). Laureate of State Prizes of the USSR (1941) and BSSR (1969). Professor (1960). Member of the Belarusian Union of Composers (1933). Board Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Composers (1938–1949). Honorary member of International Slavic Academy of Sciences, Education, Arts and Culture (1995).

He was born on August 13, 1913 in Vitebsk, Russian Empire.

He graduated from Belarusian State Conservatory (1937) in the composition class of Professor V.Zolotarev. In 1948–1967, he held the position of a teacher at the Composition, History and Theory of Music Department, since 1967 he taught the composition, instrumentation, score reading. He held the post of the director/rector of Belarusian State Conservatory named after A.Lunacharsky (1948–1962). Head of the Composition Department (1967–1997). He was one of the musical education figures who were engaged in organizing the educational process at Belarusian State Conservatory in the post-war years.

A.Bogatyrev was among the composers who presented first considerable achievements in the field of academic genres at the first Decade of Belarusian Art in Moscow (1940).

A.Bogatyrev is one of the creators of the Belarusian opera. For writing the opera “In the Forests of Polesie”, the composer was awarded the Stalin Prize.

Students. A.Bogatyrev is a founder of Belarusian National School of Composition. Among his students are People’s Artists of the USSR and the BSSR E.Glebov, I.Luchenok, People’s Artists of Belarus G.Vagner, A.Mdivani, Yu.Semenyako, D.Smolsky, S.Cortes, Honored Artists of Belarus G.Surus, V.Voitik.

  • vocal and instrumental music (cantatas, oratorios, monologues);
  • orchestral music (symphonies, concertos, suites, overture);
  • chamber and instrumental music;
  • vocal music;
  • music for plays, movies, and radio plays.

Published works: articles in the Belarusian Soviet Encyclopedia (BelSE), magazine “Mastatstva”, the newspapers “Litaratura i Mastatstva”, “Soviet Belarus”, “Zvyazda”, “Evening Minsk”.
