Head of the Music Theory Department at Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Rector of the Conservatory (2001–2004, 2009–present). Minister of Culture and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation (2004–2008). Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (1999). Honored Cultural Worker of the Republic of Buryatia (2007). Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation in Literature and Art (2004). President of the International Union of Musicians. Member of the Union of Composers of Russia.
Born on August 8, 1949 in Leningrad, RSFSR. Graduated from Moscow State Conservatory in 1973, and completed his postgraduate studies there in 1979, specializing in musical art. Since 1980 – PhD of Art History (dissertation “On the Role of Sound Material in the System of Musical Means”). Since 1992 – Doctor of Art History (dissertation “Musical Composition of the 20th Century: Dialectics of Creativity”).
From 1992 to 2001, A. S. Sokolov was the vice-rector for research at Moscow State Conservatory named after P.Tchaikovsky; currently, he is a Professor of the Department of Music Theory, and since 1996, he has been the head of the Department; in 2001–2004 and from 2009 to the present, he is the Rector. He heads the Academic Council of the Conservatory.
The musicologist’s main area of research interests is related to contemporary musical culture and the problems of analyzing 20th-century music. More than 60 scientific works (books, articles, and textbooks) are devoted to this topic, highlighting new aspects of the relationship between music and philosophy and aesthetics, psychology and semiotics, and musical acoustics.
A.Sokolov delivers reports at scientific symposia and conferences, participates in the work of expert councils and major charitable foundations, is a member of the jury and organizing committees of a number of international music competitions, including the International Rakhmaninov Piano Competition (USA, 2002), the XII-XV International Tchaikovsky Competition (Russia), and the International Youth Tchaikovsky Competition (Japan).
For many years, A.Sokolov has been engaged in musical critical, educational and organizational work as a member of the Union of Composers and the Russian Music Fund.
A.Sokolov is the Chairman of the Council of Rectors of Conservatories of the Russian Federation, the Council of Rectors of Conservatories of the CIS Member States, the Society of Music Theory of the Russian Federation, the Board of the Moscow Musical Society, the International Union of Musical Figures, and the President of the Council of the All-Russian Organization of Intellectual Property. He is also a member of a number of organizations (the Union of Composers, the Russian Music Fund, the Council for Music Education and the Council for Science of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, etc.).
