The Library of Belarusian State Academy of Music presents a thematic exhibition “Belarusian Women Composers” in honor of International Women’s Day, March 8, and the Year of the Belarusian Woman.
By decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus, 2026 has been declared the Year of the Belarusian Woman. This decision has become a symbol of respect for the role of women in the life of the state and emphasized priorities related to family, work, and care. Head of State Alexander Lukashenko noted: “Without love for a woman, there can be no true love.”
Women actively participate in all spheres of the country’s life, including shaping the cultural image of our time and making the lives of others brighter and more harmonious. But among them, there are particularly unique representatives of the fair sex who feel equal and confident in such a traditionally male activity as composing music.
The Belarusian school of composition is represented by a number of talented female composers who have made significant contributions to national music art. These include Edi Tyrmand, the first composer-graduate of the Belarusian State Conservatory; Galina Gorelova, one of the most performed contemporary composers in Belarus; Elena Atrashkevich, Chair of the Belarusian Union of Composers since 2019; and Lyudmila Shleg, Larisa Murashko, Larisa Simakovich, Alina Bezenson, Anna Korotkina, Valentina Serykh, Lyubov Sytko, and others. Their music is distinguished by its genre diversity, high artistic taste, spirituality, lyrical dominance, and emotional richness.
The work of these gifted women has enriched Belarusian music art, bringing new colors and depth to it. Through their creative work, they enhance Belarus’s unique cultural heritage. The exhibition presents materials on the work and lives of six Belarusian women composers: E. Tyrmand, G. Gorelova, L. Shleg, E. Atrashkevich, A. Bezenson, and L. Murashko. These include reference and encyclopedic publications, collections of articles, conference proceedings, photographs, sheet music, and audiovisual documents.
The exhibition will be on display in the reading room (Room 210, Academic Building No. 3, 22 P. Brovka Street) from March 3 to March 31, 2026.
The library staff congratulates the beautiful half of the Belarusian State Academy of Music on this occasion and wishes them new creative heights, family well-being, and self-confidence!
