JOHANN TRUMMER (1940-2019)

Honorary Doctor of Belarusian State Academy of Music


Austrian organist and teacher. Doctor of Philosophy and Theology. Member of the Board of the Presidium of the New Bach Society in Leipzig. Professor Emeritus of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz.

Born February 18, 1940 in Bruck an der Mur, Austria. Graduated from the University of Graz in Theology and Musicology, the Higher School of Music and Performing Arts in the organ class of F. Illenberger, in the harpsichord class of W. Schwarz. Since 1966, he taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts. In 1979-2000 – Head of the Institute of Performing Practice, 1973-1991, 2000-2008 – Head of the Institute of Church Music and Organ, referent for work with foreign students.

1969–2008 – Vice-Rector of the Theological Seminary of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau. Member of the Board of the New Bach Society in Leipzig. Since 1996, he has regularly conducted master courses and lectures, and worked as Chairman of the State Examination Commission at Belarusian State Academy of Music. He has been actively performing as an organist and harpsichordist in Europe, America, Canada, the Philippines, and Israel.

He has given lectures and master classes at higher education musical institutions in Belarus, Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Italy, Canada, and the Philippines. He has been repeatedly invited as Chairman and jury member at international organ competitions in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Russia. He has participated in European television and radio programmes.

  1. Trummer was the curator of many organ construction projects, including for the Archcathedral Church of the Holy Name of the Virgin Mary in Minsk. In 2011, he donated an organ from the company “Diego Cera” Manila (Philippines) to the Academy of Music. His scientific interests were related to liturgy and music (organ music and hymnology, history of Austrian church music, performance practice of early music, the works of J.Bach).
